The English Football League Checkatrade Community Club of The Year Regional Awards were held on Monday evening at the House of Commons. The event was hosted by BT Sport and Football on 5 presenter Lynsey Hipgrave, who was extremely complimentary of the event as seen on her twitter feed.
Supporters Direct representatives Ashley Brown and Deborah Dilworth were lucky enough to be invited to witness the winners accepting their awards. These included the community trusts of Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United, Burton Albion, Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Portsmouth, all of whom have had dramatic impacts on their local communities helping them clinch their regional award.
One example of the work being carried out by the community trusts is from Burton Albion Community Trust. They have been honoured with this award for introducing an opportunity for prostate checks for fans in conjunction with a local hospital. This initiative has led to 11 of the 130 fans tested being referred to hospital with a diagnoses of prostate cancer and receiving treatment.
All six clubs are now vying for top place as the 2017 Checkatrade Community Club Year Award, with the winner to be announced on the 9th April at the 2017 EFL Awards. We wish them all luck and hope they can inspire other trusts with their success stories.
These awards continue to demonstrate how important football clubs, community trusts and supporters trusts are to local communities around the UK.
