Bundesliga: 50+1 remains
Representatives of the national supporters group Unsere Kurve on Tuesday handed over more than 100 000 signatures from fans of all clubs to maintain the 50 +1 - rule to the president of the DFL (German Football League), Dr Rauball, collected on the request to amend the statutes of the DFL in relation to the 50 +1 - rule.
In recent weeks, fans of all clubs of the 1st and 2 Bundesliga, Regional League and clubs in the lower divisions campaigned strongly for the preservation of the 50 +1 - rule and the rejection of the proposal put forward by Martin Kind from Hannover 96. Supporters Direct has actively supported the "50+1 must remain" campaign.
The same day the members of the DFL rejected the proposal put forward by Martin Kind by an overwhelming majority of Bundesliga clubs: 32 voted against the proposal, 3 clubs abstained and only leaving only Hannover 96 voting in favour of their own proposal.
Thus, the proposal against 50+1 tends to be off the table - for now.
Background:
Until the late 90s all German football clubs were entirely members associations, until professional clubs were given the right to spin-off their professional football ‘section' into an external limited company separate from the parent club (the parent club being the members' association).
However, the members' associations must retain the majority shareholding of the newly separated limited companies. This ‘50+1 rule' makes it impossible for private investors to take over German football clubs, but allows some degree of outside investment. And meaningful fan involvement within those ownership structures and regulations has been achieved in many cases.
